LED TVs The Next Generation Television

LED TVs are the newest technology in the Television world. Gone are days for big and bulky Cathode rays TVs that once occupied big space in our living room. The new age slim and sexy looking LED TVs are fast replacing the old TV sets now. This one is the successor of LCD TVs. First thing you need to know about LED TVs is that they create their picture by using a collection of LEDs as source of their back light instead of using CCFLs.

Advantages of a LED Light Source The LED TVs creates brilliantly sharp and true picture colour. In this technology the panel is dotted with thousands of individual LEDs that can be turned off or dimmed in groups. The advantages of LEDs is that rather than trying to create blacks by closing up the LCD (liquid crystal matrix), areas of LEDs behind that panel can be selectively turned off. Now, this process reduces light bleed from the panel and helps in creating truer, deeper blacks with improved picture contrast. LEDs emits broader spectrum of white light in comparison to that emitted by CCFLs and it can easily split into more colours. Hence, the white light produced by LED increases the colour range and produces a more affluent colour experience.

Two Types of LED TV
There are mainly two types of LED TVs available in market today. First kind is the one described above and is known as a back-lit LED TV. The other form of LED TV is known as an edge-lit LED TV. This one has different lighting pattern. Instead of a panel of LEDs behind the picture like in the first kind, it has edge-lit LEDs, bordering around the outer surface of the liquid crystal matrix. The light emerging from this ring of LED’s is diffused by a specially designed panel to create a uniform light source behind the panel. This edge-lit technology helps in creating ultra thin flat screen TVs as it does not require a panel of LEDs. However, the selective dimming facility of the back-lit LED TVs that creates truer blacks and better contrast is missing here. And the white light produced in the edge-lit LED TVs produces narrower spectrum in comparison to back-lit TVs and hence the colour saturation is reduced. But still this is much better than a standard LCD TV.

Advantages of LED TVs
One of the biggest benefits of LED TVs are that they consume lesser energy in comparison to old fashioned TVs. LED TVs are energy efficient and are able to save 40% electricity in comparison to a standard LCD TV. The other advantage is that as CCFL tubes become dimmer during the course of the time, reducing picture quality too, the performance of LED TVs remains same, it doesn’t degrade with time. The manufacturers are also claiming that these next gen. TVs are made on environmental friendly pattern. It has no toxic mercury used in the CCFLs. So, if you are a real TV buff looking for blacker blacks, true colours and sharper contrasting picture then consider the next generation of new age TV technology called LED TV
